Lamar Smith, the Republican official in charge of the House Science, Space, and Technology Committee, has now penned an editorial urging the public not to. The buffet at Jade was always full of fresh food and quite a variety of stuff to pick from. We ate breakfast outside every morning, and Aaron was always there waiting with a smile. All the waiters and waitresses were great there. Now the sit- down restaurants were not quite as great when it came to service. They seemed very understaffed. Usually a restaurant, like these, would have someone to serve water, bread and clear the tables which would free the wait staff up to tend to their tables. However, the wait staff was required to do it all, which had them running and forgetting things. The food in the restaurants was very good though. And I noticed they did not adhere to the men having to wear pants rule, which made my husband very happy. I am surprised the resorts still try to impose this restriction at resorts, as few American men want to put on long pants for dinner. A collared shirt and closed shoes or dress sandals would be enough . Also, be sure to try the outside sit- down restaurant, Castaways, for lunch. We tried it the last day and we were sorry we didn't discover it sooner because the food was fabulous. I got the chicken fajitas and my husband got the fish tacos and all of it was great. Also, be sure to check out the Coco Caf. It tastes just like Starbucks, and they also have tasty croissants you can take to go. Most of the staff was wonderful, but some were stuffy and rude. I personally witnessed people being told they were too loud. Another instance people were told no water balls in the adult pool. They weren't bothering anyone. This happened to more than one group. Another issue I had was that 7 out of 1. We have traveled many of times before and never experienced anything like this. For these reasons I will not recommend Now Jade. Customer Rating. H. More> We initially had very good maid service. We arrived early, knowing we'd likely have to wait for a little for our room. Customer Rating: Be wary of people dressed in Apple shirts who direct you to Vacation Club folks. B. More> Apple personnel directed us away from our transport to the hotel to the Vacation Club folks who proceeded with their little song and dance routine - and promised No this is not a time share, No you do not have to go on a tour, No we are not selling anything - just want to tell you all about the new umbrella company Apple etc now fall under. Rooms avg but split level not suitable for for crawling kids. Service was good but only the Mexican food was good. Everything else was average at best. They spend a lot of time trying to sell you time shares and excursions. You then go to reception, and they book you in to a sales presentation. This was the only negative part of the hotel stay. What was promised to be a 9. During our breakfast they asked us questions about our holidays and then after this took us to view their VIP area. You then enter into a room with loud vibrant music and they try to sell you holidays in advance. Anyway, we got our $1. They have a nightly turndown service, which we must've admit was a real luxury that we enjoyed. The hotel runs a shuttle bus for $1. Cancun or playa Del Carmen. There is a taxi that can take you to and that worked out at $3. They also had Tequila tasting classes, guacamole making classes and even winetasting, which was a lot of fun. You could tell that this was more about quantity rather than quality. Yes we would. Would we recommend them? Yes we would. Staff were amazing. Hotel spotless. AMJMARWELL, London, United Kingdom. Tue Aug 1. 5 0. 4: 5. EDT 2. 01. 7. We took a lot of time choosing this hotel for our family holiday this year. Never having been to Cancun we were not sure what to expect. The hotel was great particularly the staff. We booked a Preferred Club Suite Ocean Front Double. The room was great, plenty big enough and the hotel put a extra bed in the room so that our two children did not have to share a double which worked very well. The view from the room was super. The room was well equipped with great toiletries, loads of towels and serviced every day to a very high standard with the mini bar topped up. The restaurants we tried were all good and the food first class. The Italien was our favourite. Even the buffet restaurant had a wide choice that changed so did not get boring even after two weeks. The breakfast buffet offered everything you could imagine including local dishes. The main pool area was lively with music and activities but not rowdy. Our kids enjoyed it. Initially we thought that there would be a problem with loungers as they all seemed to have been reserved by people by 8: 0. We did always get a lounger or two when we wanted them even if not in our first choice spot. We did not use the kids club so cannot comment on that. All the hotel staff mucked in together and cleared the whole beach in a couple of days. It was a mammoth effort and very impressive. There are lots of them and they are all friendly, helpful and cannot do enough for you. It soon became apparent that all the Americans routinely tip the bar staff, waiters in fact everybody. We did tip sometimes and it was appreciated but did not seem to make a big difference if we didn't. Room service food lacked a bit of sparkle compared to the restaurants but was fairly quick and hot when it arrived. Spa was expensive but good. We did not go to the sales presentation and did not feel pressure to go contrary to other reviews. We only did two excursions and fishing trip and a boat trip to Isla Mujeres both were good. Sunscape Bavaro Beach Punta Cana - Punta Cana - Caribbean Hotels. Trip. Advisor Traveller Reviews. Don't listen to bad reviews. Kelly A, Wed Aug 1. EDT 2. 01. 7. Read all the bad reviews online and we were a little scared to come to this resort. I'm going to keep this as short as possible. Yes, the beach is a bit of a shock when you arrive. They are doing what they can to fix it. If you come on vacation for the beach I suggest the Dominican side of the resort. The beach there is actually half decent with lots of natural shade. The seaweed is bad but they are doing their best to clean it up. Nothing special but edible. The best food we found was the pizza from the pizza shop. It's the best resort pizza I have ever add and the guys who work there are busting out pizzas all day. They work so hard and I am sure those ovens are awful to stand next to all day. We had a very sweet maid and I never once met a rude staff. Always greeted with a smile or an hola. Everything has been super clean and fridge is filled everyday no issues. They are constantly working in this heat yet still smile and say hello. The staff do a great job of seeing to needs of the guests. Honorable mention goes out to the gentleman at the pizza place (don't remember his name, he works late : ( and to Victor at the beach bar. The Sunnyside Grill also serves breakfast and lunch buffet style but less busy and views across the sea. Entertainment team is brilliant and there are things going on on the beach and around the pool all day. Shops either side of the hotel, shops to the left of the main entrance and more local stalls to the right (about 8 mins walk). Everyone was friendly. The entertainment team was phenomanel! Alejandro and his team were the best! I will definitely be coming back and recommending! A summary of Autumn: Chapter 2 in Toni Morrison's The Bluest Eye. Learn exactly what happened in this chapter, scene, or section of The Bluest Eye and what it means. Autumn: A Novel (9. Ali Smith: Books“Autumn is about a long platonic friendship between an elderly man and a much younger woman. His name is Daniel. Her name is Elisabeth. She’s a 3. 2- year- old fitfully employed art lecturer at an unnamed university in London. She comes to read to, and be with, him. There’s a bit of a Harold and Maude thing going on here. ![]() As Elisabeth and Daniel talk, and as Elisabeth processes the events of her life, a world opens. Autumn begins to be about 1. It’s about poverty and bureaucracy and sex and morality and music. It includes a long and potent detour into the tragic life and powerful painting of the British Pop artist Pauline Boty (1. Smith makes plain, should be better known. This is the place to come out and say it: Ali Smith has a beautiful mind. I found this book to be unbearably moving in its playful, strange, soulful assessment of what it means to be alive at a somber time. Smith is Scottish, and she’s written plays and journalism in addition to many novels and books of stories. Enter your mobile number or email address below and we'll send you a link to download the free Kindle App. Then you can start reading Kindle books on your smartphone. ![]() ![]() I’ve not read all of them, though I will. I have no early quibble with the novelist Sebastian Barry’s comment that she may be . This form is perfect for Smith, because her mind will go where it wants to go. And where her mind goes, you want to follow. I suspect that this shrewd and dreamy, serious- but- not- solemn novel will be an uncommonly good audiobook, for people who are into that sort of thing. Spring can really hang you up the most, but for now I am struck by, and stuck on, Autumn.”—Dwight Garner, The New York Times“. Their extraordinary friendship forms the moral center of this beautiful, subtle work, the seventh novel by Smith, who consistently produces some of Britain’s most exciting, ambitious and moving writing. Smith teases out big ideas so slyly and lightly that you can miss how artfully she goes about it. Smith’s writing is fearless and nonlinear, exploring the connectivity of things: between the living and the dead, the past and the present, art and life. She conveys time almost as it if is happening all at once, like Picasso trying to record an image from every angle simultaneously. Smith’s writing is light and playful, deceptively simple, skipping along like a stone on the surface of a lake, brimming with humanity and bending, despite everything, toward hope. The best parts in Autumn, the most moving parts, the transcendent parts, come during Elisabeth and Daniel’s conversations about words, art, life, books, the imagination, how to observe, how to be. Theirs is a conversation that begins mid- paragraph and never ends.” —Sarah Lyall, The New York Times Book Review“’All across the country, people felt it was the wrong thing. All across the country, people felt it was the right thing. All across the country, people felt they’d really lost. All across the country, people felt they’d really won.’ That might sound like present- second America, but it’s actually Scottish novelist Ali Smith—with a leg up from Dickens—describing post- Brexit Britain in Autumn, the first of a planned quartet of season- based novels. Smith is well known for taking an elastic approach to words. Here, she extends that courtesy to time itself. Layered, resonant, and wittily clever, Autumn confirms that Smith is a novelist for our time—. Like any successful novel of ideas, Autumn doesn’t end; it reverberates in one’s bones, recalling Eugenio Montale’s argument in The Second Life of Art, that the power of a book, painting, dance, or any art form is not a culminating catharsis but a recurring echo. Thus Smith’s autumnal leaves cling to trees as the questions and quandaries linger. Autumn shimmers with wit, melancholy, grief, joy, wisdom, small acts of love and, always, wonder at the seasons.”—Valerie Miner, The Boston Globe“If authors can be seasonal, then Scottish writer Ali Smith is, to my mind, a summer novelist. Her fiction, even when it depicts upsetting events, has an Arcadian atmosphere reminiscent of As You Like It, as if her characters were wandering through a green glade on a sunny day. Psychological complexity is not a hallmark of Smith’s work, but its buoyancy and charm more than make up for that. In Britain, Smith has won the Whitbread, the Goldsmiths, and the Costa prizes, and has been shortlisted for the Man Booker three times. American readers ought to be better acquainted with her genius. Smith knows how to tease the glory out of the most plainspoken English. Smith’s literary spirit is essentially playful, and in Autumn it finds its counterpart in a little- known (but real) painter of the Pop Art period, Pauline Boty. Boty was beautiful and fearless, a free spirit who dabbling in acting and, as Elisabeth sees it, had the rare ability to represent female pleasure and joy on canvas. You can see why Smith thinks of the painter as a kindred spirit. Autumn’s most daring formal move is to attempt the immediacy of journalism, depicting the national mood while the nation is still feeling it. At first Smith’s choice to start with autumn seemed out of character, but of course that means that this ambitious four- novel sequence will end with summer and Smith in her element. If we are all very lucky, perhaps the world will catch up with her there, too.”—Laura Miller, Slate“The stunning Autumn is the first of a projected quartet of seasonal novels by Scottish author Ali Smith. Set in the factional, jingoistic post- Brexit United Kingdom—where . If fall is the twilight of the year, what will Smith's long cold winter bring—and better yet, her spring and summer? A triumphant story of a May- December friendship within a divided Britain.”—Bruce Jacobs, Shelf Awareness“What kind of art will come out of this moment? If Ali Smith’s Autumn is a harbinger of things to come, the work that emerges over the next decade will be extraordinarily rich. The novel, the first book in a quartet inspired by the seasons, considers post- Brexit Britain at the tail end of last summer, experienced through the perspective of a 3. Elisabeth. But its ambition and craft allude to—and cite—great works of literature, from Brave New World to The Tempest. Through Smith’s dazzling, whimsical feats of imagination, a news cycle described by Elisabeth as . As the novel proceeds, she layers together fragments of books and paintings and song lyrics in an act of literary decoupage, as if to mimic the fragile patchwork of national identity. The work Autumn seems most indebted to is T. S. Eliot’s Four Quartets, poems that are also structured loosely around the seasons, and in which nature has a symbolic power. Eliot, like Smith, considers time as a flexible entity, with memory a guiding force that allows people to find divine meaning in the universe. And Four Quartets, like Autumn, was written amid great national turmoil, during World War Two. But Smith has a kind of irrepressible sense of joy that peeks out through the darkness. Smith, in reckoning with the catastrophe and wreckage of a fraught historical moment, picks through it just as precisely to reveal the beauty and the humanity buried deep below the surface.”—Sophie Gilbert, The Atlantic“The first of a projected quartet, Autumn hovers around the season of harvest and final things, but the possibility of transformation is also very much in the air. A novel that, under all its erudition, narrative antics, wit and wordplay, is a wonder of deep and accommodating compassion.”—Ellen Akins, The Washington Post “Smith’s novel plays an intimate melody against a broader dissonance, probing the friendship between an art historian and an aging songwriter as they grapple with personal predicaments and a perilous world.” —O, The Oprah Magazine. Salinger's natural heir? It's not as preposterous as it sounds. Not since Salinger's plucky English orphan, Esm. Autumn again knits together an astonishing array of seemingly disparate subjects, including mortality, unconventional love, Shakespeare's Tempest, a rhyming advertisement jingle, and the xenophobia underlying both Nazism and current populist neo- nationalism. Smith is better at making tight connections than most airlines. Free spirits and the lifeforce of art—along with kindness, hope, and a readiness 'to be above and beyond the foul even when we're up to our eyes in it'—are, when you get down to it, what Smith champions in this stirring novel. For a book about decline and disintegration, Autumn remains irrepressibly hopeful about life, something . A Scot now residing in London, she doesn’t write . She is too subtle for that, but her work is clearly responsive to social and political issues. Indeed, the fact of the referendum, the emotions it raised, and the sense of ending—or beginning—that accompanied the vote run at times as a litany, lists of hopes or complaints, in a recitation of divisive uncertainty. What is certain is, as the title asserts, that a cycle is unfolding: winter seems to lie ahead. But the novel has aspects that subvert that fear. The surprises abound in the novel, but the mood is balanced, reflective, mature. The prose styles vary, structure reflecting the hectic turns of public feeling, the abrupt shifts in time and mood. Smith’s prose is seductively simple, beguiling, its effects hard- won.”—Edward T. Wheeler, Commonweal“. Autumn is another breathless feat. It engages acutely and beautifully with topical concerns and perennial issues. Smith muses on art, literature and memory, plus the transience of life and the horror of Brexit. Some of her meditations are imbued with autumnal tones and textures (melancholy, regret, nostalgia); others are flecked with wit. As ever, Smith regales us with endless wordplay. Smith's most substantial components speak volumes with poetic intensity and lucidity about an enduring companionship, a fractured Great Britain, the tragedy of aging and the cyclical nature of time. Buying a new house presents the future home owners with many potential pitfalls: from leaky faucets to vermin infestations. But what if the house comes equipped with its very own ghost? As reality shows like Ghost Hunters proved, haunted houses are no laughing matter – at least if you’re stuck in one and can’t call the Ghostbusters to help you. Under the Shadow: The final entry from our must-see indie-horror list, Under the Shadow is a supremely tense horror film from Iranian director Babak Anvari. It's a Wonderful Life (1946) is number 1 on the Movie Review Query Engine's list of the best holiday movies as of 14 August 2017. It also tops Rotten Tomatoes' Best. No genre exemplifies Bad-Good like the horror genre. Sure, there are a few action movies that are unintentionally funny, but for the most part all other movies are. Over the decades, horror movies explored all kinds of haunted houses – from crumbling Gothic manors to bland suburban homes. With the release of James Wan’s Conjuring 2 – a horror following the paranormal adventures of Ed and Lorraine Warren (played by Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga), it’s just the right time for Screen Rant’s list of 1. Best Haunted House Horrors. The Amityville Horror (1. George and Kathy Lutz (James Brolin and Margot Kidder) bought their dream house in upstate New York only to find themselves beset by strange phenomena. Misfortune seems to plague the family as well as the Catholic priest (played by Rod Steiger) who tries and fails to bless their home. As strange substances ooze from the walls of this seemingly normal house, George begins to grow sullen and develops a meaningful relationship with his axe. In 1. 97. 5, the Lutz family allegedly experienced a series of increasingly alarming supernatural phenomena in their newly bought New England house where, years ago, a mass murder took place. In 1. 97. 7, author Jay Anson wrote down their supposedly true story that became a bestseller and a basis for the 1. The Amityville Horror. True or not, the Lutz family story has since then gained a ghastly unlife of its own, resulting in a dozen sequels over the last four decades. House on Haunted Hill (1. Eccentric millionaire Frederick Loren (Vincent Price) cordially invites you to spend a night in his ghost- haunted mansion. During your stay, you’ll receive a . If you manage to survive the night unharmed in this accursed house, you’ll be richly awarded. However, ghosts may prove to be the least of your troubles during your stay in the House on Haunted Hill. American film maker William Castle became known for the gimmicks he used to promote his movies. In 1. 95. 8, Castle promoted his thriller Macabre by offering his customers a free certificate for a $1. For his 1. 95. 9 horror flick House on Haunted Hill, Castle developed a gimmick called “Emergo.” In certain movie theaters, he installed an elaborate pulley system that would allow a plastic skeleton to fly right over the movie’s audience during the crucial scenes in the movie.
The Changeling (1. Academy Award- winning actor George C. Scott stars in this Canadian horror film as John Russell, a composer who moves to Seattle after his wife and daughter die in a tragic car accident. He rents a large Victorian manor only to learn that it is possessed by a ghost of a boy murdered here decades ago. As Russell begins to unveil the mystery behind the boy’s murder, he learns about its connection to the career of a powerful US Senator Joseph Carmichael (Melvyn Douglas). Inspired by the supposedly real experiences of the film’s screenwriter Russell Hunter, The Changelingis a stylish, albeit dull horror movie about a protagonist confronting his personal tragedy while investigating a supernatural mystery connected to a political scandal. The Changeling is widely considered to be one of the inspirations behind the 1. Japanese horror movie Ringu that similarly uses the idea of a child’s body hidden in an old well. Crimson Peak (2. 01. Edith Cushing (Mia Wasikowska) is a daughter of a rich businessman Carter Cushing (Jim Beaver). She falls in love with Sir Thomas Sharpe (Tom Hiddleston), an English nobleman who travelled to the United States with his sister Lucille (Jessica Chastain) in search of investors for his family’s red clay mine. Edith eventually marries Sir Thomas and moves to Britain. However, a sinister agenda is afoot and Edith is aware of it only because of her ability to see ghosts. Guillermo del Toro’s gothic horror movie Crimson Peak may not be the most original movie out there, but it sure looks amazing. Heavily indebted to lavish Hammer horror movie productions from the 1. Crimson Peak mostly takes place in a crumbling, yet opulent gothic manor. With its echoing hallways and crumbling walls oozing blood- red clay, Allerdale Hall is the true star of this film. The Conjuring (2. The Conjuring is loosely inspired on the real- life paranormal investigations conducted by Ed and Lorraine Warren (Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga), whose reports inspired the book (and later the movie) The Amityville Horror. In The Conjuring, they help Roger and Carolyn Perron (Ron Livingston and Lili Taylor), who moved in an old Rhode Island farm house with their daughters only to find themselves endangered by a spirit of a long- dead witch. For 1. 4 years, producer Tony De. Rosa- Grund tried to film a movie inspired by the original taped interview between Lorraine Warren and Carolyn Perrin. Writers Chad and Carey Hayes developed the original script around 2. The Conjuring was directed by the Malaysian- born Australian film maker James Wan, who already proved himself in the genre by creating the Saw franchise with Leigh Whannell. The Conjuring became a huge box office success, leading to a sequel, The Conjuring 2, released in June of 2. House (1. 97. 7)Japanese horror movie House may not be the scariest one on this list, but it is by far the craziest. It follows a group of Japanese school girls led by Gorgeous (Kimiko Ikegami) as they visit her Auntie (Y. After Auntie disappears inside of a refrigerator and a flying head attacks one of the school girls, the house itself starts to devour the school girls one by one using items like pianos and grandfather clocks. House lies somewhere between a straightforward horror film and a psychedelic Looney Tunes cartoon. Japanese film maker Nobuhiko Obayashi was inspired by the fears of his pre- teen daughter Chigumi, which were developed into a screenplay by Chiho Katsura. More of a surreal experience than a horror movie, House was quite popular with the audience at the time of its release but received mixed reviews from the critics. Poltergeist (1. 98. Steven and Diane Freeling (Craig T. Nelson and Jo. Beth Williams) live a quiet domestic life in Californian suburb. That life falls apart when their daughter Carol Anne (Heather O’Rourke) begins to communicate with entities hiding inside the TV static. As the Freeling household gets increasingly endangered by the supernatural, Steven desperately contacts a group of parapsychologists who begin the investigate the phenomenon led by the medium Tangina Barrons (Zelda Rubinstein). Poltergeist was ostensibly directed by the Texas Chain Saw Massacre director Tobe Hopper. However, it was Stephen Spielberg who wrote, produced and directed most of the movie. Hopper was hired because Spielberg was contractually prohibited to direct any other films while working on E. T. Not especially scary even by the 1. Poltergeist nevertheless quickly became one of the highest- grossing movies of 1. The Legend Of Hell House (1. Physicist Lionel Barrett (Clive Revill) is hired to investigate the Belasco House, the “Mount Everest of haunted houses” whose first owner, perverted millionaire Emeric Belasco, disappeared without a trace. Barrett is joined by his wife Anne (Gayle Hunnicutt), a mental medium Florence (Pamela Franklin) and a physical medium Ben Fischer (Roddy Mc. Dowall), the lone survivor of the previous investigation. As this team of paranormal researchers explores the Belasco House, it seems as if the building itself is trying to kill them. British horror film The Legend Of Hell House was based on a bestselling horror novel Hell House by the American sci- fi and horror writer Richard Matheson, most well- known for his 1. I Am Legend. Matheson previously wrote screenplays for Rod Serling’s original version of The Twilight Zone and adapted his own novel into a tense and taut horror thriller that’s still being widely imitated. Insidious (2. 01. Josh Lambert (Patrick Wilson) and his wife Renai (Rose Byrne) have recently moved into a new house. However, their son Dalton (Ty Simpkins) falls into a coma after witnessing a mysterious figure in their attic. Soon, supernatural events begin to plague the Lambert household. It is only after they contact a team of paranormal investigators led by Elise Reiner (Lin Shaye) that the Lamberts learn that their son has been hijacked by the evil ghosts from the astral dimension looking for a way to return back to life. Director, writer and producer James Wan first made a name for himself by directing Saw in 2. Although Saw quickly became a lucrative franchise, Wan wasn’t satisfied by directing violent and gore- filled movies and moved on to more subtle horror movies dealing with supernatural possession. Insidious came out in 2. Filmed for mere $1. Since then, there have been two other movies in the series: Insidious: Chapter 2 (2. Insidious: Chapter 3 (2. Ju- On: The Grudge (2. The only thing worse than a haunted house is a house whose haunting is contagious. In Ju- On: The Grudge, we are presented with a family home in Nerima, Tokyo where decades ago a monstrous crime took place. In a fit of jealousy, Takeo (Takashi Matsuyama) murdered his wife (Takako Fuji) and their son (Yuya Ozeki), turning them all into vengeful spirits. Ever since then, they unrelentingly haunt and murder anyone who enters their home, even if they leave it right away. The best thing about a brief trend of Hollywood remaking J- horrors was that it introduced the wider audience to the disturbing world of Japanese horror movies. The Ju- On franchise originated in the late 1. Japanese film maker Takashi Shimizu. After their success, Shimizu went on to direct a big- screen adaptation Ju- On: The Grudge in 2. American remake in 2. So far, Ju- On franchise includes 1. The Orphanage (2. Laura (Bel. As an adult, she returns to her old orphanage with her husband Carlos (Fernando Cayo) and their adopted son Sim. The 3. 0 Best J- Horror Films of All Time « Taste of Cinema. Probably the genre of Japanese cinema that has produced the most well- known contemporary Japanese films, J- horror brought to the forefront the style and aesthetics of the country, which have been somewhat forgotten after the V- cinema era. In the process, franchises that are still present were created, with their impact reaching Hollywood, which produced a number of remakes. However, the genre has been thriving in the country since the 1. Here is a list with 3. Ringu 0: Birthday (Norio Tsuruta, 2. The prequel of this story deals with Sadako’s story, as she tries to become a theater actress, after advice from her doctor who tries to find a cure for her constant nightmares. Due to her beauty and charisma, she soon becomes the star of the troupe, but strange occurrences start to happen as her powers are revealed. Hideo Nakata had already abandoned the trilogy, disappointed by the sequel, leaving it to Norio Tsuruta. However, the film was even worse than the second one, filled with clich. The result was, once again, quite horrifying, but the movie lacked the depth and originality of the first one. Carved: The Slit Mouthed Woman (Koji Shiraishi, 2. Based on a Japanese urban legend, “Carved” is one of the most cult entries on this list, and part of a large franchise that currently features seven films. ![]() A description of tropes appearing in Uzumaki. Kurôzu-cho, a small Japanese seaside town, is plagued by mysterious happenings. A man commits suicide in. Who doesn’t love a good horror movie or even a really terrible one? The Japanese horror genre (known by the abbreviated term “J-Horror”) has given us films. Comic books are notoriously difficult to make scary. They don’t have the advantage of sound to build atmosphere, and there is no possibility of jump-scares. La mayor tienda especializada en manga y cultura japonesa, con el más amplio stock. Líderes en venta de productos de Dragon Ball. Gran catálogo de comic nuevos y. Decades ago, a spirit of a woman wearing a surgical mask terrorized a Japanese suburb, by asking people “Am I pretty?” before slaughtering them. Currently, similar incidents start happening again, and teachers and police try to discover who is turning against the students. ![]() Koji Shiraishi directs a distinct B- movie, where terror derives from extreme violence and the grotesque depiction of the evil character. Furthermore, the concept of child abuse adds another level, both in the horrific and the grotesque aspects of the film. However, character development or plot twists are not to be expected. Gemini (Shinya Tsukamoto, 1. Another film by Shinya Tsukamoto that stands apart from his usual aesthetics, “Gemini” is based on a story by Edogawa Rampo. In Tokyo in 1. 91. Yukio is a successful doctor who is also popular due to his services in the war, and because he works often with victims of pestilence. The sole trouble in his life is his wife, who, although extremely beautiful, is an amnesiac. However, at one point, both of his parents are found dead, and the perpetrator seems to be a ragamuffin whose face is identical to Motoki’s. Tsukamoto creates a visually great film that benefits the most from the set design (particularly in the traditional houses), the costumes, the truly onerous depictions of a number of characters, and the horrific sound. However, the script and the direction have many faults, and although “Gemini” has its moments, it definitely stands on a lower level than other works of the director and the list. Tag (Sion Sono, 2. Based on the novel “Real Onigokko” by Yusuke Yamada, which has spawned six other films, “Tag” is another bloodthirsty trip by one of the masters of the category, Sion Sono. The film starts in a fashion expected from Sono, as a bus filled with schoolgirls is torn in half along with them, by something that seems like wind, in a bloodbath that leaves only Mitsuko standing. The cutting in half of schoolgirls continues for a while, until Mitsuko arrives at a school where Aki greets her, although she cannot remember who she is. The film continues in that fashion, with the protagonist finding herself in different settings; in one as Keiko, a woman who is about to get married, and in another as Izumi, a runner. The rest of the film is a sequence of battles and constant running, in a story that is quite hard to follow. Sono drifted far away from the book, instead shooting a surrealistic “Alice in Wonderland” film of shorts, which is filled with many of his usual perverse themes and notions. In that fashion, the movie entails a good deal of violence and gore, gorgeous female protagonists, martial arts fighting among girls, some subtle lesbian notions and much fanservice, including schoolgirls in much too short skirts (to the point where their pants are often shown when they are running). In general, it has anime aesthetics, not to mention the teachers on a killing spree, and the groom with the pig’s head that squeals. Spiral (Higuchinsky, 2. Based on the manga “Uzumaki” by Junji Ito, “Spiral” is a unique entry in the genre, as it combines horror with black comedy and surrealism. The story revolves around a town that becomes obsessed with anything that has a spiral or vortex shape, until it reaches the point where most of its inhabitants start to act like human snails, crawling on walls and coming out only when it rains. The David Cronenberg of manga. Junji Ito is one of the top leading mangakas in the horror genre, his most popular works being Uzumaki, Tomie, Gyo and The. Ouran High School Host Club (jap. Todo # 1 or W 17 Años 1984, el manga 20th Century Boys 20th Century Boys (Kanzenban) 21st Century Boys 21st Century Boys (Kanzenban) 3, Calle de los Misterios 3x3. The film was the featured film debut of Akihiro Higuchi under the. Others become terrified of anything of that shape, to the point of suicide. Higuchinsky managed to direct a film that is quite terrifying, despite the somewhat incoherent scenario and the frequent injections of black humor. This time, the sentiment derives almost exclusively from the sublime visuals, as spirals are portrayed in a uniquely terrifying fashion. The movie also benefits from the evocative atmosphere that Higuchinsky gradually builds. One Missed Call (Takashi Miike, 2. Although very similar to “Ringu” and “Ju- on”, “One Missed Call” had a large impact, spawning two sequels, a TV series, and a Hollywood remake. College student Yoko receives a voicemail on her cell phone, which is dated two days in the future and she can hear herself screaming in it. ![]() Two days later she dies, and her friend, Yumi, starts to think that the phone call might have something to do with it. Soon after, she realizes that the she also has one missed call, as terror begins spreading on campus. Takashi Miike directs a film so unoriginal that at times, it looks like a parody. However, his purpose was to shoot a movie similar to the Hollywood productions of the genre, and in that aspect, he totally succeeded. Furthermore, he injects his peculiar sense of humor and some grotesque visuals, as he makes a comment about the excessive cell phone use by the youth. Despite its obvious faults, the film is quite entertaining, and it managed to become a big commercial success in Japan. Zoo (Ryu Kaneda, Masaki Adachi, Hiroshi Ando, Komiya Masatetsu, Junpei Mizusaki, 2. Probably the least known entry on the list, “Zoo” features five adaptations of Otsuichi novels, four live- action and one animated. Because different individuals directed them, the five segments differ greatly, but there are some common elements. For example, all of them entail a depth in their script that is not usually met in the genre, and three of them feature extreme family stories (“Kazari and Yoko”, “Seven Rooms”, “So Far”).“Hidamari no Shi” is the one that stands out, because it is animated and has a sci- fi setting. Furthermore, it is the most philosophical one. The titular one is probably the weakest, as its surrealistic setting and the peculiar timeline makes it very hard to understand. Nightmare Detective (Shinya Tsukamoto, 2. Shinya Tsukamoto refrained from his “metallic” hyper fast past to create his most commercial work, up to that point. However, the “guerilla shooting” element remained, as he was responsible for the direction, the script, the cinematography, the editing, the art design, and even had a role in the film. The script revolves around three people in Tokyo. Keiko Kirishima is a detective dealing with the case of two mutilated corpses who appear to have committed suicide. As she’s reached a dead end in her investigation, she requests the help of a young man who has the ability to enter people’s dreams. Although he is reluctant to help, he eventually agrees and the three of them embark on a trip of terror. Although the concept of living nightmares is not new, Shinya Tsukamoto took it to another level, one more horrific and grotesque than any similar movie before, as his depiction of what happens in people’s nightmares is quite gruesome. The film’s biggest trait, though, is that Tsukamoto managed to retain his unique, experimental aesthetics, despite the commercial nature of the film. Ringu 2 (Hideo Nakata, 1. Mai Takano, Ryuji Takayama’s university assistant, tries to find out the causes of his death, along with another colleague named Okazaki. Soon, they stumble upon the story of the videotape and Sadako. However, true terror engulfs them when they realize that Ryuji’s son has the same abilities Sadako had. The film retains the horrific atmosphere of the original, as it benefits the most from the already elaborate stories of Sadako and the videotape. However, as the social messages are not present and the initial shock is toned down, “Ringu 2” definitely stands on a lower level than its predecessor. Marebito (Takashi Shimizu, 2. Another cult entry on the list, “Marebito” was shot rather quickly, with a digital camera and a miniscule budget, and even featured Shinya Tsukamoto in the protagonist role. Masuoka is obsessed with video of any kind, and splits his time between watching random videos on his many monitors and recording in the streets with his camera. One day he records a man committing suicide, who seems to be under the influence of an image only he can see. Masuoka becomes obsessed with this image and starts searching for it. Takashi Shimizu directs a confusing film, which does not offer a definite outcome whether Masuoka is delusional or if the setting actually belongs to the fantastic. However, he manages to construct a horrific atmosphere through the slow and deliberate pace, the scarce dialogue, and the plethora of uncanny images and occurrences, which linger between the extreme and the fantastic.
